Memory Lane Issue 159 Summer 2008 Editor: Ray Pallett Published by Jeanette and Ray Pallett This edition of Memory Lane, pictured below, was published to subscribers on 7th May 2008 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Welcome to the Summer edition of Memory Lane which I hope includes something for everyone. Firstly, I would like to record my thanks to Bert Padbury of Oxford for donating to Memory Lane his collection of photographs. There are some excellent itmes in the set, some of which I have never seen before. There is a great photo of the young Joe Loss with his band, Jack Harris playing the violin, Henry Hall’s orchestra, a portrait of Billy Bissett, Lew Stone in later life with Golden Years editor, Reg Bristow and some mystery photos of bands and artistes I do not recognise. All will be appearing in Memory Lane over the coming issues.
In the last issue of Memory Lane there was a photograph of Harry Leader and his Band. I received a number of communications pointing out that the vocalist in the picture was none other than Matt Monro, probably Britain’s best singer from the post war era. One of the communications was from Matt’s daughter, Michelle. It transpired she had not seen a photo of her dad with Harry’s band. I was delighted Memory Lane was able to assist Michelle in her researches. Towards the end of lat year, the magazine This England stated they were no longer going to issue dance band CDs. This is a serious loss, bearing in mind also that the takeover of Sanctuary means that we've lost the Living Era label. I suggest all readers let This England know how dissapointed they are with this decision, as ask them to reconsider. The address is Alma House, 73 Rodney Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL50 1HT. RAY PALLETT Featured in the Summer issue are the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Troise and his Mandoliers, Al Bowlly, Billy Amstell, the Freshmen, Joe Mooney among many others items. In addition there are CD reviews, a lively readers' letters column, Collectable Labels and other news and articles for those who love the great British Dance Bands and music of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
